Black Sea Bass

Offshore · Peak Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb

Habitat in NE Florida

Black sea bass live on nearshore hard bottom and artificial reefs in 30-100 feet. The 904 has consistent populations on the reef line 5-20 miles off Mayport and St. Augustine. They school heavily on structure and feed aggressively on small bait, squid, and shrimp pieces.

Identification

Dark-bodied fish, often nearly black with iridescent blue-green highlights on bigger males. Pointed dorsal spines. Federal Atlantic minimum 13 inches, daily bag varies by season — typically 5-7. Most NE FL fish are 1-2 lb keepers; 4-5 lb is trophy.

Seasonal pattern

Best winter (November-March) when other offshore species are quieter — sea bass become the reliable target. Spring and fall consistent. Summer slows. The cold-water reef bite for sea bass when nothing else is biting offshore is what keeps NE FL boats running through January.

How to fish for them

Bottom rig with two #2 or 1/0 hooks, 8 oz sinker, squid strips or cut fish on each hook, fish 60-100 ft over hard bottom. Drop to the bottom, crank up two turns, wait for the tap-tap-tap. They bite fast and hold tight. Easy fish for new offshore anglers — reliable action when other species are off.
