Habitat in NE Florida

Channel and white catfish live throughout the SJR system, the deeper holes in NE FL creeks, and the lower river basin. They feed on the bottom in slack water during the day and cruise channels at night. The bigger trophy channel cats live in the deeper SJR holes near Mandarin and Doctors Lake.

Identification

Long sleek body with no scales, distinctive whisker-like barbels around the mouth, forked tail (channels) or square tail (whites). Florida no minimum size on most cat species, no daily bag in fresh water. Average 1-3 lb in NE FL; 10+ lb channels caught regularly in the river.

Seasonal pattern

Year-round. Summer warm water has them most active, especially overnight. Winter slows but they're still there in deeper holes. Night fishing with rod holders during summer is the classic NE FL approach.

How to fish for them

Three-way rig with a 2 oz weight on the bottom dropper and a 3/0 circle hook on the side dropper, baited with chicken liver or fresh-cut mullet. Cast into a deep hole, set the rod in a holder, wait. Catfish bite slow and steady — let them load the rod fully before you reel. Night fishing in summer produces the biggest fish.

How to spot them

Local tip: Night-fish the St. Johns River channels with rod holders; the three-way rig holds current and keeps bait at the fish's level.
