Largemouth bass live in NE FL freshwater systems — Doctors Lake, Black Creek, Julington Creek, the upper SJR system. They hold tight to structure: lily pads, fallen timber, dock pilings, weed edges. Florida-strain largemouth grow big — the SJR system has 8-10 lb fish for anglers who put in the time.
Greenish-bronze body with a dark horizontal lateral band, big bucket-mouth that extends past the eye. No statewide minimum size on largemouth in most freshwater (check local body-of-water exceptions), daily bag of 5 with one over 16 inches.
Year-round catchable. Spring (March-May) is the spawning window — fish move shallow, beds visible in clear water. Summer they push deep mid-day and feed shallow at dawn/dusk. Fall (October-November) the feed-up before winter is excellent. Winter they slow but a slow-rolled jig can still produce.
At sunrise on Doctors Lake or Julington Creek, throw a topwater frog over lily pads or near fallen timber. Pause it, twitch it, pause again. The strike is explosive. After the sun is up, switch to a Texas-rigged plastic worm and work the same cover. Light line (15-20 lb fluoro) for clear water; heavier (40-65 lb braid) for heavy cover.
